SHOW OUTLINE
Cold Case is a drama about Lilly Rush, a female detective in the Philadelphia homicide squad who finds her niche when she's assigned to "cold cases"--crimes that have never been solved. Previously, she used her instinctive understanding of the criminal mind on current murders. Now, she's interrogating witnesses whose lives and circumstances have since changed, making use of today's new science and finding fresh clues to solve cases that were previously unsolvable, all of which appeals to this smart, driven detective. She's also prepared for the consequences: that her work will open up old wounds and may lead suspects to commit new crimes. When she hits a dead end, Rush seeks advice from her respected mentor, Lt. John Stillman. Also on the team are Det. Scotty Valens, Rush's confident and strong-willed partner; Det. Will Jeffries, who's been around long enough to serve as Lilly's link to the past; and Det. Nick Vera, a tough cop who's considered the go-to guy for getting a confession. Rush sees her assignment as a turning point in her career when she decides to make it her business to make sure that no victim is ever forgotten. As of the start of the third season, former narcotics detective Kat Miller has also joined the team.

EPISODE SYNOPSIS
In 2002, Dennis Hofferman joined a community theatre as a cabaret singer, but on opening night he never made it to the stage to 'break a leg.' Instead, he was shot to death directly outside the backstage door. His murder was considered one of several shootings and muggings committed by local robbers who were never caught, however, all evidence pointed to someone inside the theatre. Most of Dennis' theatre friends called it the greed-eyed monster that killed him and now Lilly and Jeffries begin their quest to catch a killer.

CHARACTER DESCRIPTION
Dennis Hofferman is a New York taxicab driver who dreams of performing on stage. He finally gets his big break in a community theatre production of Cabaret, but before he can make it on-stage for opening night, he is murdered.

EPISODE TRIVIA
In the casting sides and in the CBS press release for this episode, Dennis' last name was Hirschfelder and Della's (the local community theater owner in the beginning of the episode) last name was Morris. These were later changed to Hofferman and Gardner, respectively.

All the songs in the episode are taken from the musical Cabaret. The songs not performed by any of the actors in this episode are taken from the cast recording of the 1998 revival, starring Alan Cumming as Emcee and Natasha Richardson as Sally.
